Verkehrschaos in New York / Rush Hour in NYC

Eines habe ich nach meinem erneuten Abstecher nach New York gelernt - diese Stadt ist definitiv kein Ort für begeisterte Autofahrer. Man kann kaum eine Minute fahren, ohne auf die nächste rote Anpel zu treffen. Na und wenn die Ampeln mal zufällig nicht auf rot stehen, dann kann man aber ziemlich sicher sein, daß hinter der nächsten Kurve ein weiterer Stau auf einen wartet.
Hier stehen wir übrigens am Times Square.

Well guys, for those of you loving to drive around in your car NYC is, definitely, not the place to live! Why? Because that city is a zoo for car owners. You can hardly drive for one minute without a red light and even if there is no red light you can be dead sure that the next trafic jam is supposed to be around the next corner.

Columbus Weekend in New Jersey and New York

Nachdem ich die ersten sechs Wochen meines Praktikums hinter mich gebracht hatte entschied ich mich, das Columbus Weekend (anfang Oktober) mit Jim und seiner Familie in New Jersey zu verbringen. Ich nahm den Bus von Washington Chinatown nach New York Chinatown. Die Busfahrt dauerte über sechs Stunden und ich war ziemlich fertig, als ich endlich in New York ankam. Dieses Mal unternahmen wir einen Trip zum Ground Zero. Es war ziemlich faszinierend, daß mit meinen eigenen Augen zu sehen. Ich mußte mich an die Fernsehbilder vom 11.09.2001 erinnern, als die Flugzeuge in das World Trade Center stürzten. Jetzt konnte ich mir das wahre Ausmaß des Terroranschlags auch erst wirklich vorstellen. Dieses riesige Loch mitten in der Stadt umringt von gigantischen Wolkenkratzern, wirklich beeindruckend.

After six weeks on the job I decided to spend the Columbus Weekend with Jim and his family in New Jersey. I was really looking forward to seeing him again. It took me more than six hours to get there (I took the bus from Chinatown Washington to Chinatown New York). This time, we made a trip to Ground Zero. Standing in that very place three years after the terror attacks I could imagine the tremendous impact 9/11 must have had on the people from NY and every American in the country. It was really amazing to gaze at that big hole in the center of the city surrounded by all these giant skyscrapers. I remembered those pictures on TV from that very day back in 2001 when people desperately jumped into death seeing no other way to escape the flames. That must have been a horrible situation for the people inside the towers!

Maryland unterstützt John Kerry / Maryland supports John Kerry

Dieses Foto ist ein gutes Beispiel für die politische Einstellung meiner Nachbarschaft in Maryland. Die überwiegende Mehrzahl der Leute waren Anhänger von John Kerry und nur die allerwenigsten von ihnen unterstützten George Bush.

The pic above gives a good example for the political attitude of the neighbourhood at my place in Maryland. The vast majority of the people were supporters of John Kerry and they didn´t give a damn on George Bush.

Ich übernehme das Ruder / I take over control

Nach fünf Wochen der Einarbeitung war es soweit: meine Vorgängerin, Katrin, beendete ihr Praktikum und nun war es an mir, mich alleine durchzuschlagen. Leider haben wir uns in ihrer letzten Woche etwas zerstritten, da wir beide etwas angespannt waren. Glücklicherweise konnten wir das an ihrem letzten Tag aber noch klären. War gespannt, wie es weitergehen würde - jetzt, wo ich alleine war.

At the end of the fifth week of my internship my successor, Katrin finished her internship. Fortunately, we could settle our little dispute from that week before she left. Now it was up to me - I was on my own "and had to keep the wolf from the door :-)".

Die nächsten Wochen / The next few weeks

Die folgenden Wochen war ich mit den gleichen Dingen beschäftigt wie zuvor - also lesen nonstop. So langsam folgten dann aber auch die ersten praktischen Arbeitsaufgaben! Auf Anraten meiner Mitpraktikantin Katrin nutze ich das Wochenende dafür, mir dieses Mal das Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial anzuschauen, welches (verglichen zum dem Lincoln Memorial oder dem Jefferson Memorial) um einiges größer war. Hatte wieder grandioses Fotografierwetter, wie unzweifelhaft auf den Fotos erkennbar. Außerdem nutzte ich das wieder einmal fabelhafte Wetter für einen kleinen Spaziergang entlang am Potomac River.

The next few weeks were business as usual. Since my fellow intern Katrin had recommended me to visit the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, I decided to go there on the weekend to come. Compared to the other presidential memorials (the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial) this one was much bigger in its space. As you can see on the pics the weather was fantastic again, excellent for taking pictures. I also made good use of the day and made a walk along the Potomac River.

Terroranschlag / Terror attack

Auf diesem Foto sieht man das Thomas Jefferson Memorial, das sich in der Nähe des Ronald Reagen Airport befindet. Da die Flugzeuge an dieser Stelle schon alle im Sinkflug waren, konnte ich diesem Schnappschuß nicht widerstehen, der einen vermeintlichen Angriff auf das Jefferson Memorial zeigt :-)

Here we have the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. Since the memorial was located next to the Ronald Reagen Airport, I couldn´t resist the temptation to take this pictute that indicates a terror attack. I know, I am a nasty boy, so sue me!

Lincoln Memorial

Das Lincoln Memorial war an den Wochenende stets ein Besuchermagnet. Nachdem einem Trip zum World War II Memorial habe ich häufig dem lieben Onkel Abe einen Besuch abgestattet.

The Lincoln Memorial always attracted plenty of tourists. I often gave a friendly hello to good old Abe after visiting the World War II Memorial.

World War II Memorial

Das World War II Memorial sollte schon bald zu einem meiner Lieblingsplätze in Washington werden. Es besteht aus einer Reihe von Marmorsäulen, die in einem Kreis um einen Springbrunnen in ihrer Mitte angereiht sind. Jede Säule repräsentiert einen der Staaten der USA. Wannimmer der Himmel so wolkenlos und blau war wie auf dem Foto nutzte ich dies für einige schöne Schnappschüsse.

The World War II Memorial should soon become one of my favourite locations in Washington. The memorial consists of columns, each of which represents one of the states of the US, forming a circle around a fountain in its center. It was always a great subject for taking pictures.

Das zweite Wochenende / Weekend No. 2

An meinem zweiten Wochenende machte ich mit meiner Mitpraktikantin Andrea auf den Weg zum Arlington Cemetery in Virginia. Der Arlington Cemetery ist ein Soldatenfriedhof und eine große Touristenattraktion direkt an der Grenze zu Virginia. U. a. wurde John F. Kennedy hier beerdigt. Das Anwesen gehörte ursprünglich einmal Robert E. Lee. Nun mag der eine oder andere von Euch denken "wer um alles in der Welt ist denn das?". Also, Robert Edward Lee war General der Armee von Nordvirginia im amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg von 1861 - 1865 und die große Hoffnung der Südstaaten (die sich von der Union losgesagt haben), eine eigene Nation zu gründen. Elf Staaten, darunter auch sein Heimatstaat Virginia, schlossen sich zwischen Dezember 1860 und Mai 1861 zusammen und gründeten die CSA (die Konfederierten Staaten von Amerika). Nachdem er sich (nach tagelangen inneren Quälereien) entschloß, den Südstaaten und nicht der Unionsarmee zu dienen, wurde sein Anwesen von der Unionsarmee anektiert, als diese den Norden Virginias besetzte und schließlich immer weiter in das Gebiet der Konfederierten vordrang. Die Bronzefigur auf dem Bild ist übrigens ein Abbild von, Ihr ahnt es schon, dem lieben Robert.

My second weekend should become very exciting. I made a trip to Arlington Cemetery with Andrea, one of my fellow interns. The Arlington Cemetery is located at the boundary between Virginia and Washington, D.C. and is a famous tourist attraction today. Famous people like John F. Kennedy are buried there. The mansion used to belong to Robert E. Lee. Well, maybe some of you will ask now "who the hell is that guy?". I will tell you. Robert Edward Lee was a General of the Confederate Armee in the Civil War between the northern states (the Union) and the southern states (the Confederacy) from 1861 - 1865. The Southern states rebelled against their membership in the Union and eventually secceded between December 1860 and May 1961. Eleven states which left the union joined together to form the CSA (the Confederate States of America). Robert E. Lee, who didn´t symphatisize with seccecion as a matter of fact, finally decided to put himself into service of the Confederacy because he couldn´t bear to raise the sword against his home state Virginia, which became one of the eleven member states of the Confederacy. He became the commander of the Army of Northern Virginia. After he had joined the Confederate Army, the Union Army annexed his mansion (Arlington House) which lies so close to Washington, D.C. As you can imagine, the guy on the picture above is Robert E. Lee.
Well, that´s enough history lesson for today!!!

Mein erstes Wochenende in Washington / My first weekend in Washington

Nach meiner ersten "arbeitswütigen" Woche ging ich an meinem ersten Wochenende (wie übrigens auch in den folgenden) auf Entdeckungstour durch Washington. Erstes bekanntes Gebäude, an dem ich jedoch eher zufällig vorbeikam, war das Treasury Department, welches sich glaube ich auf der Rückseite der $10-Note befindet. Mein eigentliches Ziel lag dahinter - das Weiße Haus. Da stand ich dann auf einmal vorm Rose Garden und habe in bester Touristenmanier schön Fotos gemacht. Das Foto ist das erste, das ich vom Weißen Haus gemacht habe. Als ich nun so davor stand war es schon ein komisches Gefühl als ich merkte "So, da bin ich nun". Anschließend machte ich mich auf zum Lincoln Memorial. Davor besichtigte ich jedoch noch das World War 2 Memorial, welches sich vor dem Lincoln Memorial befindet. Nachdem ich dann "Old Abe" einen Besuch abgestattet hatte, schaute ich mir auch noch das Korean War Memorial und das Vietnam War Memorial an. Nach stundenlangen Marsch durch Washington bekam ich immense Wadenkrämpfe, die sich teilweise tagelang hinzogen. Dadurch war der morgenliche Gang zur Metro recht schmerzhaft.

After the "very busy" first week of my internship I used the weekend to discover Washington. My first goal was the White House which was just a fifteen-minute walk away from my office. On my way there, I passed by the Treasury Department which is named the Alexander Hamilton Building (its picture covers the back of the $10-bill, I guess). Afterwards, only 3 minutes later, I reached my goal and I stood in front of the Rose Garden of the White House. Surrounded by tourists I did the same as everybody did - taking pictures. The pic about is from my first walk to the White House. It felt kinda strange when I realized "Well, here I am". The Lincoln Memorial was next. On my way there I passed by the World War 2 Memorial. After having taken some pictures I walked to the Lincoln Memorial which was located west of it and walked up the stairs to see "Old Abe". I also visited the Korean War Memorial and the Vietnam Memorial. Both are located pretty close to the Lincoln Memorial. After having marched for hours I got a damn cramp in my lower leg so I had pain and difficulty in walking for the next few days. Especially walking to the metro in the morning became very difficult and painful.

Unterkunft in Maryland / Accomodation in Maryland

Mein Zimmer in Maryland. Wie man sieht, ist dieses Foto kurz nach meinem Einzug entstanden. Habe meine Koffer erst nach und nach ausgepackt und mein Hab und Gut im Schrank verstaut.

This is a picture of my room in Maryland. I took it after my moving in as you can imagine since all my luggage is still spread all over the place - but this was the usual situation as a matter of fact :-)

Die Arbeit beginnt / Let´s get the job done

Am 30.08.04 habe ich dann mein Praktikum begonnen. Morgens mußte ich mit meinem ganzen Gepäck zur Metrostation laufen, da ich ja abends in mein Zimmer in Maryland einziehen würde. Als ich dann, nach 3 Stationen mit der Metro, beim Büro ankam, war ich schon ziemlich kaputt und bei der Hitze auch schon ziemlich durchgeschwitzt. Als erstes stellte mich Katrin dann erstmal meinen ganzen Kollegen vor. In den ersten vier Wochen bestand meine Arbeit eigentlich nur darin, den ganzen Tag Schulungsunterlagen durchzulesen. Zwischendurch konnte ich es mir nicht verkneifen, mal die Äuglein zu schließen und an was "schöneres" zu denken. Auf dem Foto sieht man meinen (sehr aufgeräumten!!!) Schreibtisch.

August 30th, 2004 was the first day of my internship. I had to carry all my luggage to the metro station since I would move into my home in Maryland the same day after work. When I arrived at the office, after a long walk to the metro station with all my stuff and a short ride on the metro, I was pretty exhausted because of the hot weather. Then, Katrin introduced me to my new colleagues. Katrin had allready prepared me that, for the first four weeks, I had to read a great deal about administration and accounting stuff before practising myself. That was kinda boring ´cause reading all day long is neither very interesting nor encouraging. Anyway, I made it through the first four weeks this way - not a clue about the tons of work to come !!! On the pic you can see my very tidy desk. It was always looking like this when I was "busy"!

Auf nach Washington / Washington, here I come

Am 29. August, einen Tag vor Beginn meines Praktikums, brachte mich Jim nach Washington. Wir waren etwa 3,5 Stunden unterwegs, bis wir in D.C. ankamen. Da meine Vermieterin aus Maryland erst am folgenden Tag von ihrem Urlaub zurückkehren würde, hatte sich glücklicherweise meine Praktikumskollegen Katrin bereiterklärt, mich die erste Nacht aufzunehmen. Nach meiner Ankunft sind wir dann erstmal in ein Museum in Washington gegangen. Abends waren wir zum Essen bei einigen Kollegen aus dem Institut eingeladen, somit hatte ich schon einmal die Chance, einige von ihnen kennenzulernen.

On August 29 th Jim took me to Washington by car. I was glad he offered to take me there since I had to spend the first night at my predecessor´s place since my landlady told me she would return from her vacancy one day later. The trip to Washington took us around 3,5 hours. Afterwards I had said Jim good bye Katrin and I went to the Washington Mall because she wanted to visit a museum. We spend there 1 or 2 hours before we went back home. Then, some colleagues invited us for dinner. We spent there some hours and for me this was a good opportunity to get to know some of my new colleagues.

Central Park

Obwohl der Park im Herzen von New York liegt, herrscht im Inneren absolute Ruhe und von außen ist kein Autolärm zu hören. An heißen Sommertagen empfiehlt sich ein kurzer Spaziergang in den Park. Überall waren Musiker und Künstler zu sehen.

Inside Central Park, although located in the heart of the city, it is complete and utter quite - no car noise shatterns the silence. It´s a nice place to go for a rest in the shade on a hot summer day. There are musicians and artists all over the place.

Empire State Building

Vom Empire State Building hat mam einen fantastischen Blick auf New York City. Insgesamt haben wir mehr als eine Stunde gebraucht, bis wir durch die Sicherheitskontrollen durchwaren und in den Fahrstuhl zum oberen Stockwerk steigen durften. Aber es hat sich gelohnt!

The Empire State Buildings enables a fantastic view over NYC. It took us more than an hour to pass the checkpoints and to enter the elevator to the top floor, but it was worth the effort.

Freiheitsstatue / Statue of Liberty

Mein erster "touristischer Höhepunkt" in New York war die Freiheitsstatue. Zusammen mit Marlene und Erika machte ich mich an einem bewölkten Morgen auf, der guten Frau einen kleinen Besuch abzustatten. Während sich unsere Fähre Liberty Island nährte stellte ich mit Verwunderung fest, daß die Freiheitsstatue um einiges kleiner war, als ich angenommen habe. Im Vergleich zu Abbildungen auf Fotos oder aus dem Fernsehen hatte ich sie mir etwas größer vorgestellt.

My first "tourist attraction" in NYC was the Statue of Liberty. Marlene, Erika and I made a trip there on a cloudy morning. When the ferry headed for Liberty Island I was a little bit surprised when I realized that the good old lady was much smaller than I had expected. On pictures or on TV she always appeares much taller.

New York - New York

Die erste Woche meines Aufenthalts verbrachte ich in Edison, New Jersey bei meinem Cousin Jim, seiner Frau Marlene und ihrer Tochter Erika. Er ist Reservist und kämpfte an vorderster Front während des Angriffs auf Bagdad. Während unserer zahlreichenden Abende in seinem Keller verbrachten wir Stunden damit, uns die Fotos seiner Stationierung dort anzusehen - das ganze immer mit einem gut gekühlten Budweiser oder Sam Adams in der Hand! Außerdem unternahmen wir zahlreiche Ausflüge nach New York City zur Freiheitsstatue, zum Empire State Building und zum Central Park.

I spent the first week with my cousin Jim, Marlene, his wife, and their daughter Erika at their home in Edison, NJ. He is doing military reserve service and was deployed in Baghdad for a period of some 9 months. He shew me tons of pictures of his deployment down there. We also made several trips to NYC (Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building and Central Park).

Unterkunft in New York City / Accomodation in NYC

Meine erste "Wohnung" in Manhattan. Am Tag meiner Anreise wurde ich von Melanie, einer Bekannten aus meinem USA-Urlaub in Utah aus dem Vorjahr, aufgenommen. Im Untergeschoss war ein (ich glaube) indisches Restaurant, so wurden wir mit exotischen Klängen und Düften versorgt. Am nächsten Tag wurde ich von meinem Cousin Jim abgeholt - die nächsten Tage vor Beginn meines Praktikums verbrachte ich bei ihm und seiner Familie in New Jersey.

Here it is, my "apartment" in Manhattan, NYC. Melanie, an acquaintance of mine lives in this place and she picked me up for the very first night before my cousin Jim picked me up the day after. There was an indish restaurant on the first floor so the entire building smelt very exoticly (just as their music did).

Willkommen / Welcome

Willkommen auf meiner Blogseite. Nachdem ich nun seit 1/2 Jahr von meinem Praktikum zurück bin möchte ich Euch an dieser Stelle einen kleinen Eindruck von dem vermitteln, was ich während meiner Praktikumszeit in Washington und Umgebung so alles erlebt habe. Natürlich habe ich in dieser Zeit auch eine Menge netter Bekanntschaften gemacht (Jim, Marlene, Erika, Cord, Elfriede, Skip, Béa, Caro, Andrea, Katrin und Carolyn seien an dieser Stelle besonders erwähnt).
Die Seite wird in den nächsten Wochen weiter ergänzt.

Welcome everybody. Well well well, I have been back for half a year now. Time to look back to my time in Washington during my internship. I got to know so many nice people there (Jim, Marlene, Erika, Cord, Elfriede, Skip, Béa, Caro, Andrea, Katrin and Carolyn - to name the most important ones) and we spent plenty of time together. I will complete my journal within the next few weeks.
