Noch mehr Geschichtsunterricht / More history lesson

Wenn Ihr meine Eintragungen fleißig gelesen habt, solltet Ihr auf einen Blick erkennen, was auf dem oberen Bild dargestellt wird. Richtig, es ist das World War II Memorial. Mein heutiger Eintrag bezieht sich jedoch auf das Konstrukt dahinter, das Washington Monument (auch Ellipse genannt). Die Bauarbeiten für das Washington Monument begannen vor Ausbruch des Bürgerkrieges und mußten während der Kriegsjahre unterbrochen werden. Nach kriegsende wurde es dann fertiggestellt. Allerdings waren bei Kriegsende solch helle Steine, wie sie zuvor verwendet wurden, nicht mehr erhältlich, weswegen der obere Teil etwas dunkler ausgefallen ist.

If you folks have read my journal carefully you should know the place on the picture above - it´s the World War II Memorial, exactly. But todays´ entry is dedicated to the tall column behind, the Washington Monument (a.k.a The Ellipse). Since work on this monument had been started before the begin of the Civil War, construction had to be stopped during the war and then be continued. Unfortunately, those light colored stones which had been used for the lower section were no longer available so it had to be completed with some darker ones which cover the top section of the monument.
